Determiner and Modifier for Noun Phrase

DETERMINER

Determiner adalah kata penentu yang digunakan untuk menentukan jumlah dari suatu benda. Dengan adanya determiner kita akan dengan mudah mengetahui apakah benda tersebut tunggal (singular) atau jamak (plural), countable atau Uncountable. Determiner ini biasanya selalu berada di depan Noun Atau gini deh saya ilustrasikan agar lebih mudah.

Mari kita anggap Countable Noun ini sebagai “manusia normal (sedangkan Uncountable kita umpamakan sebagai  orang gila “bebas, suka-suka”)” dan Determiner sebagai “pakaian-nya”. Semua Orang Normal pasti dan wajib menggunkan baju kecuali orang gila yang boleh pakek atau tidak (artinya semua Countable Noun  _“terutama yang tunggal”_  pasti menggunakan determiner tapi Uncountable kadang pakek kadang tidak).

Adapun determiner terdiri atas beberapa katagori, yaitu:

  • Article                (a, an, the)
  • Possessive          (my, your, his, her, their, our, its, –‘s)
  • Quantifier          (some, any, many, much, littel, few, dll)
  • Demostrative     (this, that, those, these)
  • Number            (Ordinal = 1, 2, 3 dll. / Cardinal = the first, second dll. / Multiply = 2= double, 3= triple, 4= quadruple, 5= quintuple, 6= sextuple, 7= septuple, 8= octuple 9= nonuple atau mingkin yang lebih umum digunkan seperti “twofold, threefold, fourfold, dll.” )

Itulah determiner yang PASTI ada di depan Countable Noun (noun yang dapat dihitung). Namun jika ada Countable Noun  tidak diawali oleh determiner pasti akan ada “s/es” di belakangnya. Perhatikan contoh berikut ini:

“My mother buys new car (x) and she gets new helmet (x)”

Kedua kalimat tersebut salah karena “car dan helmet” adalah Countable noun dan setiap Countable Noun wajib di temani/diawali determiner KECUALI Uncountable Noun (dia bebas). Loh kan sudah ada kata new didepan “car dan helmet” bukankah itu sudah cukup? Perlu diingat bahwa adjective TIDAK masuk pada katagori determiner (bukan determiner). Adjective hanyalah kata sifat (cantik, ganteng, pintar, bagus, baru, dll) dan kalau kita ingat ilustrasi di atas, “walaupun orang itu cantik/ganteng, dia tetap WAJIB pakek baju selama orang tersebut masih WARAS (countable noun)”. Oleh karena itu kalimat yang benar adalah:

“My mother buys a new car (√) and she gets a new helmet (√)”

Jadi setiap kali kita melihat kata benda terutama di part 2 TOEFL, maka pastikan apakah noun tersebut Countble atau Uncountbale. Jika noun tersebout Countable, maka pastikan apakah dia sudah bersama determiner atau tidak. Jika tidak maka NOUN tersebut SALAH. Boleh saja tidak menggunakan determiner tapi harus ada “s/es” di belakang.

“My mother buys _ new carS (x) and she gets _ new helmetS (x)”

MODIFIER

Noun phrase dan Noun sebenarnya sama yang membedakannya adalah komponen penjelasnya (modifier). Kata benda yang tidak diawali,  dilengkapi  atau tidak memiliki modifier akan disebut NOUN in general. sedangkan jika noun (head) tersebut dilengkapi atau memiliki modifier , maka noun tersebut dinamakan Noun Phraase.

Adapun modifier untuk Noun Phrase terdiri dari 6 komponen yaitu:

  • Determiner               = penentu (a book, the car, much money dll)
  • Adjective                  = kata sifat (a good boy, blue books, dll)
  • Noun adjunct           = noun kembar (a book shop, a table leg, dll)
  • Gerund (verb-ing)    = verb yg dibendakan (a learning process)
  • Pr Participle (V-ing)  = reducing (a sleeping baby, running water)
  • Ps Participle (V-3)    = reducing (a slapped boy, the boiled water)

    what about this? what if you were to create a killer headline?
    I ain’t saying your content is not solid, but suppose you added a post title that grabbed folk’s attention? I mean Determiner and Modifier for
    Noun Phrase – Vocab Level is kinda vanilla.
    You might look at Yahoo’s front page and see how they write article headlines to get people to open the links.

    You might add a related video or a picture or two to grab people interested about what you’ve written. Just my opinion, it would bring your website a little bit more interesting.
